How to Replace The Clutch Assembly of Your Mack

How to Replace The Clutch Assembly of Your Mack

When you say Mack, you say reliability. But even a Mack has its bad days, and since you’re here, your Mack may be in need of some help. Today we’ll go through the step-by-step process of how to change the clutch assembly of your Mack so you don’t have to spend any extra cash on a mechanic. It’s pretty easy, you’ll see.

Tools and Parts You’ll Need:

  • New clutch assembly (ensure it’s the correct model for your Mack)
  • Transmission jack or floor jack
  • Socket set and wrenches
  • Torque wrench
  • Clutch alignment tool
  • Screwdrivers and pliers
  • Safety gear

1. Park The Truck

It may sound obvious, but make sure the truck is parked on a stable surface, with the parking brake engaged. It’s good measure to disconnect the battery to avoid any accidental power surges.

2. Prepare for Transmission Removal

Put the transmission in neutral and remove components that block access to the transmission (driveshaft, shift linkages, etc.) Tip: Make sure your mark positions on the driveshaft for easier realignment during reassembly.

3. Support the Transmission

Get the transmission jack and use it to stabilize the transmission. It can be quite heavy. Once the jack is propped up well, you can start removing the transmission bolts.

4. Remove the Old Clutch Assembly

At this point, you should have easy access to the broken clutch assembly. Unscrew the bolts on the bell housing and carefully slide the transmission back, and there it will be. Next, remove the pressure plate and clutch disk. Be careful, they’re heavy. Tip: If the flywheel shows signs of wear, resurface or replace it.

5. Install the New Clutch Assembly

Now you can mount the new clutch assembly. Use the clutch alignment tool to put it in the right place, then tighten the pressure plate bolts in a star pattern for even pressure. You can also check the manufacturer’s torque specifications to avoid over-tightening.

6. Reattach the Transmission

Slide the transmission back in place and pay close attention if it aligns correctly with the clutch assembly and the engine. Use the jack to position it carefully and reconnect the bolts.

7. Test for Proper Operation

You’re almost done! Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and try the clutch pedal. Check if the engagement is smooth and for unusual sounds. If everything feels right, reattach the components you removed at Step 2, such as the driveshaft and the linkages.

Conclusion

If you followed through with all the steps above, you should have an almost brand new Mack truck at your disposal (or at least clutch-wise). Make sure you stick with us for other Mack DIY guides. Keep hauling!
